Workbench vise

Hello everyone,

I'm new to woodworking and am setting up a workbench. I already have most of the bench but am working on installing a vise and bench dog holes. Anyway, I have these two vises that I picked up used because they seemed to be really good deals. I was thinking about selling one of them and using the other. My question is, is there any functional difference between the two vises/differences in where they're mounted? And, if I were to keep only one, which one would you recommend?

I'll mainly be doing small-medium sized projects with hand tools, if that helps.

Thanks

If it were mine I'd use the 2nd pic. No particular reason though I do suspect it has a greater opening than the one in the first pic. Also, a wider shaft pattern it looks like to me. More stable with wider jaws/workpieces. JMO

I would also go with the second one. Have one like it works great. Does it have a dog latch that comes up on the top? Can't see from pic.

Just curious do you use it as a front vise or an end vise?

Looks to me like you have 2 different vises - the green one is a face vice and the wooden one is a tail or end vise. I would keep both. One other note, the 1st (face vise) is pictured up right and gets mounted in that position on the underside of the bench while the 2nd is pictured upside down. I'd like to show my very unique workbench and its' versatility using those 2 vises but I can't seem to figure out how to post pictures on this site. I belong to other sites that are easy - just choose my pic and post!

Its' never hot or cold in New Hampshire... its' always seasonal.

I would use both vises. One on the front of the bench and the second on the side. That is if room allows it.

But if just one id use the second pic, if both put the second pic on the front
