Workbench from spruce ??

I want to build and donate a workbench to our local Rotary Club charity auction, but I canít afford to build it out of hardwood.
Has anybody built one from spruce 2 x lumber?
How did it turn out?
Even by using this cheaper wood, the cost of a decent vise will make it a pricey venture, but itís a good causeÖ

I built mine using spruce for the top and banded it with oak. My base is iron from an old machinist's table. But. I'm sure spruce would be fine for the base.

My table top is 30"X84", the total width of th4e top is 36"X84". The band is 2X6 spruce, table top of 2X4 slats and 2 layers of 3/4 AC ply. The legs are 4X4 fir and the base platform is 2X4 band with 1/2" plywood.

I have 1 vice set at the end and spans from corner to tray, Tray is 6"X84 with 1/2" ply.

I have 2 wheels setflush at one end so I can lift the other and roll it back and forth. It is very heavy and can take tons of weight. The bench height matches the TS.
