woodmovement..quartersawn / flatsawn
I'm getting started on a dining room bench..9' long 14" wide.. The gentleman I'm building it for wants it to have a lot of bulk so I priced him a bench with a 2" thick quartersawn red oak seat ..(he insisted on straight grain). After wood shopping I find that neither of the wood stores I use carries 8/4 quartersawn red oak(white oak yes but very pricey) My option was to face glue 5/4 to 3/4 and there you go..8/4 boards..been there , done that.. but now my little brain gets to thinking.. why not glue 5/4 flat sawn to the bottom side..I save about 35.00 and nobody sees the bottom anyway but !!! What about movement.. flat sawn moves more that quartersawn. Does anyone know if gluing the different grain patterns together would cause problems down the road. What do you think?
