Wood to use for a panel

Hello all! First post to this forum here, and I am a beginner to woodworking. Just got a bunch of new tools and ready to go. I did do a lot of woodworking with my grandfather as a child, now at 31 I've got the itch to build things!!!

Anyway......I'm looking to build a stand alone pantry, or cabinet with drawers on the bottom to be more specific.

My question is what to make the back and sides out of. I know I can use plywood but I've got my hands on a TON of free oak planks, but the thing is they are only 1/2" thick. Plus they have to be planed down to smooth them out. Is this too thin for me to try and make a panel out of it?

Sure you can use 1/2" stock for panels. You can glue it with a flat edge or make T&G or route a glue joint on it.

Welcome to the site Marcus.
I agree with mics, route tongue and groove joints and create your own panels.
Just make sure you plan, plan, plan.

Did you say tool sale?
