Wood traditionally used for Moulds??

Hi, I have an antique wood block mould, wondering if anyone can help me identify what wood?

Not sure its exact purpose, about 7" long, with little egg shaped moulds inside.. my guess is its for making finials from gesso or plaster. Or maybe a chocolate egg mould?!

Many thanks,
Tom
