Question Wood identification

Can someone please help me ID this wood? I would like to update it. I was thinking of using a black stain. Would I have to completely strip it? I heard you can use minwax polyshades over existing stain. PLEEEEASE help... It's making my whole house look old and ugly.

It looks like Douglas Fir with a cherry stain to me. Kinda hard to tell with the finish on it.

Looks like a standard issue SYP door from 1930s with old amber shellac finish. Test a spot with a q-tip of DNA for shellac.

I think both of you are right - Fir or SYP - same family. I only looked at the panel and saw what looks to be Cherry. Hair trigger response!
