Good evening all,
I found this slab of wood on my nephew's property and am making it into a small bench for his mudroom. I'm just wondering is anyone can identify the species of wood. It's very light in color, fairly fine grained, and appears to have been milled onsite. It has been sanded down to bare wood. (southeastern CT) Thank you!
That's a tough one. The top picture looks like hard maple. The second picture looks like hickory. The third picture looks like poplar. The fourth picture looks like soft maple. Are they all suppose to be the same board?
Yes, all the same board. I don't think it's poplar as it does not have that funky yellowish green color. I had also thought maple. I have since stained it and it took the stain really nice; has great even color. This makes me think it's not maple either. The "stripe" you see on the wider part of the board is wood glue as the slab had a slight split in it.
Thank you Steve,
Like I said it took the stain extremely will which is why I didn't think maple.
