What type of wood is this?

So apparently some upgrades are being done to my wife's office. They added soe wood to accent a wall in an outdoor patio space.

She brought home some cut offs for me.

Its dense heavy stuff... I cant figure out what it is. And if its treated with something already.

Then there is this larger piece that is maybe 2 in thick 12 inches wide and 5 feet long and weighs like 60 lbs

I tried sanding one piece to see if I could determine if it was 1. real wood and 2. finished with something.

Any ideas? My wife was not clever enough to ask. I'm just glad she thought of me to bring it home.

I'm gonna go with Teak. Grain looks about right and if it was supposed to go outdoors then it would make sense

That looks like the IPE wood for my outdoor fence. It was far cheaper than Teak, and does the same thing, except teak has a lighter color to it, and IPE is more brownish like that.

Does it have a peculiar smell when sanded Looks like Black Walnut to me. Careful of black walnut dust. causes health problems.

I'm with sanvito and guess that its Ipe,, also known as Brazilian Walnut. Check the link above and see if you agree.

I'd go with Ipe. Commonly used where exposed to weather. Not the right color for teak, not the right grain pattern for walnut & way to heavy for walnut.

Makes sense. Ill toss some water on it to see the grain better. Its definitely heavier than American walnut.

Thanks!
