Veneering Question

I have done some veneering but usually a flat insert in a box top. All I have done is with clamps and cauls - no vacuum setup.

I have some gorgeous qs sycamore that I would like to use to veneer an entire box. No problem on the face and rear of front/back/sides - that's easy. My question is what to do with the top/bottom edges. Naturally all of my veneer is face grain and I was thinking that it might look a little strange with face grain on the edges - usually face grain and edge grain just aren't the same. Do I just use the veneer and try to find an area that has some nice straight grain or do I just say "to hell with it" and use the veneer as it comes?

Any advice would be very welcome!

One of the things you can do, if it works for you in the design of the box, is have a contrast wood at every edge, thus making it more clear that each face of the box is a "panel" and thus has face grain wood. This is what it would look like if the panels were made of solid face-grain wood and I've seen boxes like that that don't seem jarring at all.

It's an abrupt transition directly from face grain to face grain that would look jarring, so if you don't want to use a contrast wood around the edges, it might not look nearly as good.

You can never have too much pepperoni on your pizza or own too many clamps.
