Torsion Box

Hello all,

I've heard many references to "Torsion Boxes" in this forum and other sources and have no clue as to what these are and for what purpose they are are used.

Can anyone give me a nutshell explanation of torsion boxes?

Thanks,

Jeff

A picture is worth 1000 words

Essentially a two sided or sandwiched rectangular box separated by equal height spacers on a grid pattern. It is lighter, stronger and resists twisting better than a solid plank. It must be assembled on a perfectly flat surface to maintain a flat finished result. Looks like this: http://www.suiteronline.com/woodworking/UTS.aspx

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

Torsion Box

A torsion box design is usually used to create a perfectly flat, rigid, strong and lightweight for its size table top, workbench or assembly table. The torsion box is an egg crate design inbetween 2 sheets of plywood or MDF.
Search this forum for more detailed descriptions and actual design configurations.
