Stair Treads

First ever Post!

Replacing old stair treads with new unfinished red oak treads. I plan on using a Dark Walnut stain but unsure about how may coats of Poly I need to apply ......for stairs that get a fair amount of traffic.

I refinished some REALLY old hardwoods a while back and did 3 coats, if you dont want it too shiny you could start with satin, I was going to do only two but ended up needing a third, the three coats of satin gave the look of semi gloss in the end. also, check out wipe on poly for the first coat, its a good bit thinner and seems to "seep" into the wood better, not the best finisher around so someone else might give ya a better idea...hope this helps!

willbless08 is correct about the treads being finished on all sides. You can take it one step further by looking at the ends of the wood and select boards for the treads that were cut toward the outer part of the log. Lumber cut closer to the center of a log are more prone to cup.
