Sanding needed for pine 2x4's?

This may seem like a dumb question but I am trying to work on my sanding principles when it comes to woodworking. I am gluing two 2x4 pieces of wood, fresh from the lumberyard, together. Is this the kind of thing that I should be sanding before I glue? They seem like a perfect shape and size at the moment and I don't want to remove too much material but I don't really know the general rules of thumb when it comes to this kind of stuff. The wood looks pretty smooth already, but I am planning on staining and perhaps lacquering it after the glue has dried. I am using super strength wood adhesive and clamps, but if I should be sanding it anyway what grit should I start at?
