rabbet joint/rebate joint

Do you all think that the term "rabbet" joint is just some guy with a thick new england accent trying to say "rebate" joint?

I know the english call it a rebate joint, I can see some old Bostonian trying to pronounce that and ending up with 'rabbet'

No, I think it all started with the word "rabbet" being misspelled (rebate), and someone on a forum started using the word "rebate" instead of "rabbet". But, it could have been someone from the STR (Save The Rabbits) society, that took offense to discussions like "machining rabbets", and decided to call it "rebate". Of course there aren't any facts to back this up...it's all conjecture.

I'm still trying to figure out how "clamp" got "cramped". Maybe at one time a cramp got confused with a crumpet, and it got called "clamp".

It is possible, I have a book from the 1800's, and it is spelled rabbit.

It could have gotten changed up long before that tho.

I'd be curious at what point they diverged. I won't comment on which is right or wrong, probably a moot point after 200+ years.
