QSWO wood gloat

The sawyer gave me a great deal on some nice cherry last year, had some quarter sawn white oak for an even better deal. I am not a great wood grader and this had some knots and defects that I will have to work around, but I got about 100+BF of it for $200, or $2 a BF. The boards are 4/4 about 10' long and range from 8"-12".

We took it right from his kiln and the moisture was 6-7%. It was a mix of quarter sawn, straight and riff sawn wood. He let me go through it with him picking the best boards with the QS rays and flecks.

Because of the late hour when I got home I could take any glamour shots of it outside. My wife got this shot as I was picking it in piling it up. I will get more soon.

Even with the defects and some of the boards are not 100% QS, some have 3/4 QS and a little other types mixed it, I think I did OK. The local hard wood dealer wants 6.90 a BF. It would probably be a better grade, but I couldn't afford it.

Now to build our new coffee table.

Who's your sawyer?

I noticed we're in the same county. Can you divulge your source?

To be honest he is not a full time sawyer. He has a full time job and does this on the side. I am not sure he wants to have his info out there, but I will say this, when he has wood, he will list it on the Baltimore Craigslist. He also is not in our county, but north of us. Just tonight we were talking about how he does not want to have too many people coming to him for wood. His situation is unique because the logs are given to him in exchange for caretaker work on a farm. The mill is also on the farm and he does not want to owner to get upset. I will email him and ask.
