Poplar. Or birch

Hey guys, good evening. I'm headed to the sawmill saturday to get some wood. I wanted to get some good all around wood for trim stain paint whatever. I have worked with birch some and it is easy to work with but a lot of people here seem to like poplar. What's the biggest difference? Does poplar stain? Thank for any response

When you say poplar, I assume you mean tulip poplar (aka yellow poplar) which is not a poplar even though it's called that. It takes stain and paint just fine. Real poplar (aka cottonwood) does NOT take stain well ... it tends to get blotchy. SO ... be sure you know which one you are getting. If it has any green in it, it's tulip poplar. Check out my site if you want to see pics of the differences.

I disagree with phinds on the cotton-wood the material i've worked with stained real nice (minwax oil base stain applied with a foam brush and wipe off with a linen cloth). I don't think it would look good finished naturaly but I was very pleased with the results. the cotton-wood was also easy to work. Which ever wood you get you should enjoy working. they both work real nice
