>>>> galvanized pipe seems too soft and the zinc seems to clog up in the cams

The clamp heads will slip on galvanized pipe. The gripping rings will sort of peel off the galvanizing and the clamp will lose it's force within a couple of hours.

I use the 3/4" black pipe. I think its pipe for gas lines. I bought mine in the lengths I wanted, allready threaded. I wiped down the pipes with mineral spirits to remove any oils and covered the top of the pipes with packaging tape. I havnt had any issues with black marks and it also keeps glue from sticing to the pipes. The movable clamp end will marr the tape up over time and it will need replaced but thats no big deal.

With so many pipe clamp options do you guys consider it just another essential that you find the best deal on whatever you can find, or hold out for something a little nicer like the Rocklers?

I reckon it comes down to timing and the individual. Some are very specific in what they want and why, some want the 'best' in its class (whatever that may be) others price and still others a good deal.

Black pipe also comes in schedule 20 and schedule 80. It's also used for fire sprinklers more than gas lines these days.

I use laquer thinner to clean off the tar coating on the pipe before use.
