Penny table holdup

I am a hobbyist woodworker. I decided to use MDF for the first and have an issue.

I made a basic "countertop" style top out of the MDF to go on an old solid wood entertainment center that i cut to shape. My wifes intent was to glue pennies on top and epoxy over like many have done online. After looking around though, we thought it would be neat to use some sort of filler in between the pennies to create an embedded-in-clay look. MY only thought was to use a mortar of some sort, tinted reddish. I know that MDF and water don't go together though. Should i just abandon this idea or is there a waterproofing or another material that i could do this with?

This will be in the breakfast nook area, it will see very little use. More than likely it will become a storage shelf for the assorted junk that the kids can't seem to find a place for.

I think you answered your own question.

Anywhere moisture gets to the mdf will cause it to swell and crumble like a cheep cookie.
