Old tool jackpot!

Hit the “old tool jackpot” today!

I’m working on building my tool collection and have been wanting to get my hands on some old chisels as well as some Stanley planes. Specifically I was looking for a No. 5 as I just finished restoring my great-grandfathers smoothing plane.

I’ve been checking facebook marketplace and craigslist regularly and for my area I just haven’t been seeing anything affordable. That is, until today. There was a new listing under “old tools” and it was just a picture of this carpenters box and this description: “Old carpenter's toolbox with tools toolbox is in very good condition, nice assortment of tools.”

Low and behold, in the pictures you could see there was a Stanley plane, a rabbet plane, some old saws, a block plane, and many other tools. He only wanted $100 for it all which comes to the second little miracle: it was in my budget. It had only been posted for a few hours so I contacted the seller holding my breath that they were still available. He said they were and we met up 30 minutes later at a local grocery store.

At the meetup the gentleman (60’s) showed me his fathers tool chest. I couldn’t believe how nice everything was. Not only were the tools I was looking for there (stanley no 5) but also a Disston and Atkins saw!!!

At that point I told the guy he was priced low. I don’t know much about hand saws but I knew Disston and Atkins were collectable. That along with planes and everything in good condition I told him $100 was a little low and that he really should sell them for more but that unfortunately it would have to be to someone else. He was grateful for the information but said that a deal is a deal and that they were mine. I ended up giving him the extra cash I had in my wallet (not much) and we ended up talking for a bit about his passed father. It was a good time.

Anyways, here’s some of what was in the box.

Stanley No. 5C (Type 16 I believe)
Craftsman 107 Rabbet plane
Stanley No. 110 Block Plane
Disston D-23
Atkins No. 65
Craftsman Hand Drill and bits
Assorted tools

If anyone has any information on some of the other tools it would be greatly appreciated. I am very new to the hand tool side of things. Well, for that matter, I’m pretty new to the power tool side of things too. Specifically, I’m curious about the three slot blades (Craftsman 3587)

Thanks in advance!

Stephen

You did very well!

Your increased offer was a stand up deal as the value was more than you paid. The slotted Craftsman keyhole blades are missing the handle if I am correct. The small plane blade may go to the rabbet plane in the mid position? Very nice saws! It makes one wonder what the heirs of an estate will do with the "old tools" .... when that time comes?

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

Thanks Woodnthings! He told me he had more tools and saws he was selling. When I got home I found the listing. 6 saws (8 in the picture so I'm not sure which) and he's selling them all for $20. I sent him a few sites about Disston and Atkins saws and told him that I wasn't sure of their value but that in selling them he should at least list them as Atkins and Disston and research their price as well.

I'm thrilled with what I got. Thanks for the name of the craftsman saw. I was having trouble with that. By small plane blade were you referring to this?

It says dandee scraper on it. I assumed it was just a scraper, does it go in the plane?

The scraper is for straight razor blades.
