oils or stain

I normally use a stain or paint and then clear coat over the top but i have been seeing alot of great projects such as the boxes by girlftsfromnature.com and he uses oils. My question is that i want the glossy look but the smooth clean look, what oils should i look at using or clear coats and such?

You can achieve a gloss finish with multiple coats of linseed oil or tung oil however if gloss is what you want I would just use a polyurethane to begin with. If it is a natural finish you want than shellac may be a good choice for you. Shellac is made from the secretions from a lac bug. They just clean and filter it and what is available in cans is thinned with alcohol. It can be purchased in flakes to where you can mix yourself.

I would forego the oils, and just use a waterbase polyurethane. It stays clear, dries fast, clean up with water. Comes in gloss, semi gloss, and satin.
