Novice question Re: Manzanita Finishing

I like to work with manzanita just make decorative pieces for around the house. Generally I just use various degrees of sandpaper and eventually several different steel wools. This produces a smooth "wax like" finish.

I wondering if there are any waxes or oils that would protect the wood give it a nice luster without giving it the super shiny lacquer look.

Total novice here so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I never have used it but the turners use it a lot. Try woodbarter or a turning forum- maybe the turning section here.

I would suggest Minwax Antique Oil Finish. When applied according to directions the finish is a nice soft luster with a wonderful feel. Every wood that I've ever used MAOF on causes the grain to really pop out. The MAOF will add a slightly warming glow to the wood.

To use, brush or rag on. In five or ten minutes wipe off and rub so that the rag glides on the finish. Wait 24 hours and do a second coat the same way.

Wait another 24 hours and you can (JPW or Minwax or Butchers or...) paste wax, shellac, polyurethane or nothing over it.

Use the right tool for the job.

Thanks a bunch for the info. This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to find. I will definitely give this a try and then post pics.

You just helped make my weekend!
