New Woodworker, help ID wood

I know this has been asked a bunch of times over and I apologize for that. I have recently started some woodworking projects and have been given access to the cutoffs from a furniture shop. Most of the pieces are smaller but will work well for what I'm looking to do at this point. I have been getting a lot of walnut cutoffs and a good amount of some wood that is lighter in tone. I have posted 2 pics of them. I'm fairly certain one of the types are poplar, as I have some of it in my shop and it appears similar. The other is a bit heavier and I'm thinking it may be maple but I'm not sure. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

PS: please explain what characteristics led you to determining what type of wood it is so I can learn to do it on my own. thank you!

It's maple.

If you can find a local source for lumber you may want to go down and buy a board or two of all the common domestic species. Write down on the board what youíre buying and go home and make few projects using the various woods. Itís a great way to get to know common species. Pay attention to the tightness of the grain, the smell, how the tools work with various species, how they take finish, etc. After just a few projects youíll be familiar with the various species.

In woodworking there is always more then one way to accomplish something.

In the top picture: the piece on top is Poplar, the piece on bottom is Birch.
