Need Advice With Boat Hatch Restoration

Hey guys,

I am trying to restore a wooden hatch on my sailboat and I think I got in over my head. I am hoping some members could share their expertise and provide some suggestions on how to move forward with this project. The hatch is slightly curved with hardwood (I believe Mahogany) on the outside and a veneer/plywood underneath. My plan was to simply strip the varnish, do a light sanding, and apply new varnish. But the underneath had some dark spots so I decided to try and remove the rotten areas. Now I am left with a mess and unsure how to proceed.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The wooden strips that frame out the underside do you think you could remove those? I'm thinking you might strip all the plywood off the underside and recover it with solid mahogany. If not you might float out the void where you have removed the plywood with bondo and cover it with a 1/4" marine grade plywood. Then it could be finished as is or if you wanted it to look nicer cover the plywood with mahogany veneer.
