Hello, I normally do not do lots of finish work but recently got a project to install a mantel out of 4" /6" cherry. I had a few questions that í was hoping to get some advice on.
First, the fireplace is going to be boxed in with two legs and a main beam about 6ft. I am having trouble getting the joint to sit flush. The beam has a bow and the walls are a bit off. Any suggestion to get that seam tight? I have done a bunch of dry fits and was using an osillating sander with 60grit, but it has been hard to get enough of the wood. Right now they will be joined with a nail. Should I put glue to try and "fill" the small void?
What is the best way to make your own wood filler? What do you normally use it on besides nail holes? Could I use it to fill a void between boards.
PS the photos are from a dry fit.
Any better suggestions to mount the wood. Right now the legs are glued and then one 4inch screw at the top into a stud and two 4in trim nails in to I the siub floor. The top beam is resting on the legs and tied to them with one 4inch nail on Each side. It is hidden on on the inside of the mantle.
