Large Sculpture Base Question

I'm building a base for a large sculpture and would like to use one piece of wood. The base needs to be 48" x 36" x 12". Does anyone know where I can find a decent hardwood in these dimensions? Or what state I might find a high quality stump? I will be carving around the outside, so need something suitable for that... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You are going to have a very hard time finding a single piece of wood that large...IF you did the price tag would be hefty $$$. There is 144 board feet in the chunk you describe, lets just use oak as an example (there are lighter and heavier woods, oak is middle of the road) Assuming the wood is dry, that chunk is going to weight 500+ lbs.

I would look into a "box", 4 sides and a top made of wood. Less weight, less expense, doable--unlike a solid chunk.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

You don't state where you are. Is it a secret? So, without knowing that it's difficult to suggest a location. Maybe one of the sawyers on this forum will help out, or you could PM Daren, or Texas Timbers, (they are both moderators).
