Large cherry lumber

I have some large cherry log that I need to cut . Besides cutting boards at 4/4 , some of them over 24" wide , what size should I cut them for mantels etc. ? How long should they be ? What is the minimum width that would be worth cutting for thick boards ?

It is ‘true cherry’?? That seems very large for real cherry,,,Not sure where you are located,,,,I’m in Western Michigan right now, and the only cherry we have that grows that big is locally called ‘black cherry’ or sometimes ‘junk cherry’. It really isn’t great wood, and is used mostly for firewood.

I think what we call black cherry around here, must be something different...Have to check it out. Though we have acres and acres of cherry fruit trees,, both tart cherries and sweet cherries, but thos trees certainly don’t get that big,.....or as big as what we call black cherry,,, some of those on my property have a diameter of over 18”
