Lacquer/stain removal

I have a head board and foot board I'm refinishing for a co-worker. The problem I'm having is trying to get the legs sanded down due to it has very small vertical grooves in them that I'm not able to get sanded down completely. Is there anything I can use to help strip it down to the wood like a lacquer/stain remover ?

You could fold sandpaper and use the edge in the grooves. Or, use the corner of a scraper, or a chisel (bevel up), and drag it through the grooves. Worst case scenario...use a chemical stripper. You could first try a waterbase one like CitraStrip. If that isn't strong enough use an MC based stripper (methylene chloride).
