How do you make a wooden ball?

I am going to do a standing coat rack for my office. I will make it from maple with a light golden stain and wipe on poly finish. The main shaft will be square with dual routed channels or grooves along the length. The coat hooks will be brass. Now the question - I want to top the rack with a maple ball, about 2 1/2 inch diameter. How do I make the ball?????

Any other ideas on the coat rack are welcome!

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

I like the swiveling lathe jig in the first video. Great way to make a perfect ball. But I especially like the homemade band saw the guy uses. Very cool.

Thanks for the quick responses. Clearly, I need to get a lathe. My next challenge. In the meantime, my wife found a 4" maple ball online. Duh.

My thoughts too. Once I saw the setup for making the ball I had to restart the video to check out the bandsaw again.

Is that lathe in the first video turning backwards?

I can't get over how beautiful the Metallica song sounds in the first video.

It sure is, look closely at how the shavings are coming off the tool.
