Another vote for a veritas mkII. It is expensive at about $70, but worth every cent.

I also have a Work Sharp 2000 that I use for rough sharpening and shaping.

I use abrasive sheets on glass as there is no question about flatness. For the guide, the Kell No3 is the best I've ever found. It references off the back of the blade, not off the front, so maintains the angle even with tapered blades and the wheels are wide apart so they dont run on the abrasive, but on the glass.
