Question Is Gel Stain the Best Product to use for Resurfacing Stained Cabinets

I am trying to save some money while having to do a bathroom remodel due to mold in my shower. It's sort of a slippery slope when you start something like this. It turns into...I might as well tile the rest of the floor as long as I'm doing the shower. While I'm doing the floor, I should do the cabinets. If I do the cabinets, I should get new countertops and so on. So I'm trying to make as many positive changes as I can, as economically as I can. I have to bring someone in to do the tile but I thought that maybe I could try to do the cupboards myself. Soooooo, I wanted to try to resurface my cabinets and if it doesn't work ..I don't like it...I'll replace them. I currently have basic oak cabinets that are stained and have a clear coat on them. I was told that I should use a gel stain for this project because it would be difficult to prepare the cabinets properly for a traditional stain. I have stained several things in my house but they were all raw wood. Never something that had already been stained. HELP!!!

You can't stain previoulsy finished wood, only unfinished wood. There are colored polyurethane finishes that might do what you want. Check MinWax at big box stores.

To refinish, it's generally best to use a chemical stripper to remove the old finish first. Then you can sand, stain, top coat or whatever.
