My BIL and I are having a disagreement about building two sliding garage doors, so I thought I'd get advice from the knowledgeable folks here. The doors will be 7ft tall and 10ft wide. I want to use 3/4" pressure treated plywood with a 1"X6" frame with cross bucks, he wants to use 1/2" with a 2"X4 frame and cross bucks. Oh, I was thinking of using screws and a little glue. If you have an opinion I'd love to hear it... Thanks, Tom

We have a very equestrian looking set of sliders on one section of our facility(around back). Its three doors @7' tall,6' wide each. These are extremely heavy, but they function well and look neat.Used 2x6's for top rails and styles.Bttm rail is 2x10 and mid rail is 2x8.....1/2" CDX was used on back.In the insets on fr side, took 3/4" cheap pine sheathing bds(very dry)and ran them on a 45*,in opposing directions........IOWs top insets all angle to the L.....lower insets angle to R.

Tigged up some fancy handles that mount to the cntr rail on outside.More about the looks, but they do get used. The panel insets are not equal in the vert sense.Lower inset is about 32" tall or so and top is the balance.A nice pc of moulding lines inset to rail.

The steel track was reiforced and welded. The factory "hangars" were flexing and the joint in track was welded as well.

We really like them, they get opened/shut maybe once a day or so.BW

I have 3 sliders on 2 tracks, the center one bypasses and they are 8' x 8', 2 x 6 PT perimeter frame, center vertical on the 4' centerline and a diagonal brace between. They are faced on both sides with 3/8 exterior plywood rough sawn. Yes they are heavy, 4 sheets of 4 x 8 3/8 ply, but being double faced resist the tendency to warp. I used commercial sliding door track and rollers from the local lumber yard, not real HD hardware however.
