Drying hickory

I just cut down a hickory tree in the backyard kept several pieces but Iíve got a slab or around slab or a cut that is about 3 1/2 inches thick and probably 30 inches in diameter.
What can I do to keep it from cracking?

Coat the ends of the wood as soon as possible. There are products such as Anchorseal made for this purpose. If you can't find any you could melt some gulf wax and brush it on the ends. Still depending on where you store the wood to dry it could take four years for the wood to dry enough to use for a slab 3 1/2" thick. If you have 30" diameter logs you won't live long enough for that to dry.

I think the OP has a cookie that is 3 1/2Ē thick and 30Ē diameter. Preventing cracks may be difficult.
