Cremation urn

I am going to really challenge myself and make a cremation urn for my father. First, he was born and raised and then died in Colorado. He loved everything about the state. I want to try and find a species indigenous to CO such as aspen. My question is, is there a better option? If so, what? I know aspen don't grow very big so would I be able to find some wide enough to make the correct sized box?
I was told by the funeral home that the inside dimensions needed to be 200 cu/in. I'm thinking I want to try my hand at dovetailed corners and I want to try and incorporate a small drawer under the cavity itself for my siblings and I to place mementos.
Does anyone have any stock they'd be willing to part with? Any and all suggestions are helpful.
Thanks, John
