Can anyone identify this wood?

This wood came from the barn of an 57 year old woodworker I know. We are in Maine. He wasn't sure what kind of wood it was. I recently planed into it and revealed this grain. I have a few ideas. What do you think it is?

I can see why you would say walnut from the picture. It is possible. It actually has a slight greenish hue to some of it in person, doesn't how up in the picture though. Someone else suggested cherry wood.

It's walnut. A little purple, green, and red (and browns) are pretty common. Definitely not cherry.

My first impression was walnut.
Then you just had to go and mention cherry. Damn, I hate when that happens. Looks like cherry also.
I still think it might be walnut though.

Sweet. I hope you're right. I'm going to be making a guitar body out of it. It's been sitting around for decades, so it should be real stable.

+1 for the walnut. The growth rings are nice and close together too. It must be an old piece.

Check out some of my custom stairs

smell it

Walnut has a particular smell/odor. Cherry is also distinct. That will tell you better. bill

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

walnut, not cherry

You can never have too much pepperoni on your pizza or own too many clamps.
