I can get walnut locally, but the last I got was steamed, and color was not very good. So, I am looking to buy some and having it shipped. Has anyone used Swords Walnut Shop(http://www.swordswalnutshop.com) If so, how was you experience?
That is where I got the steamed walnut from.....good prices, I just don't want to stain the walnut I get. In the below piece, the top and a couple of the interior rails came from hood. I had to stain them as it was steamed and did not look as good as the other I had.
Walnut is a unique species. They steam it because it will typically have white colored sap wood. People don't like that, they want all dark. A lot of walnut gets steamed because of this. Other species are not steamed. http://www.woodcentral.com/articles/reviews/articles_894.shtml
Keep looking. There are places around that sell good wood. I just don't know where in Florida. The walnut I use is not steamed and is mostly free of sapwood. I get it at Brazos Forest Products in Grand Prairie, TX. I doubt if they ship to Florida though. The parent company, Frank Paxton is located in the north and midwest.
I do...I shop Craig's List as well. In fact, most of the walnut I have purchased has been from Craig's list.
