Does it have to be round? If a square (or diamond) hole works, You could cut it up, hollow it out and glue it back together, all with a handsaw, table saw or band saw.

If you look at the photo, the depth of cut can be adjustied by moving the cutter up or down. If you buy this, take shallow cuts and let the cutter do the work, otherwise if you pull down to quickly, you can tear the wood rather than cut it.

This thread reminds me of working with my youngest son(Mechanical Engineer) in the shop.

He will come up with elaborate ways to get something done. Cut it apart, use a different tool that takes 10x longer. All while I go over with the right tool, get the job done, and move on to the next thing. :)

Honestly, this is just a fun project, go buy the RIGHT tool, and get it done. If you don't want the complete set then spend $15 on a 2" Forstner from Amazon. I'll bet you the $15 you will use it again this year...
