My Dad just got a new Bosch 1617EVSPK Router Kit and he wants to learn how to properly use it. Tips, tricks, advice.

Can any of you recommend a book(s) on routing that have been a help to you?

Maybe a site online that may have helpful information for beginners?

The only bit he has atm is a Whiteside 1/2" Shank 1/4" Radius Roundover Bit. That's the first thing he wants to learn how to use properly.

HI Dan - Check the sticky's at the start of this topic. There is one for reference material which should give you a whole pile of resources. Personally, I will recommend almost anything by Bill Hylton concerning routers. All I have seen have been well written and illustrated.

+1 on Hylton. While he waits for the books to show up, put him into watching youtube videos. Just search on "router projects", "router tips", etc. He can probably search for "rounding over with a router" and get something to watch. Some bad videos, but more good and worthwhile ones. He will get a sense of what a router can do and how to do the things he'd like to do.

We have a store called Ollies around us. Like Big lots with overstock and blow-out items. The book section will have cheap woodworking books, which I have several bought for $1.99, 2.99, 4.99 etc.

Also, go onto Amazon.com. select books and search for router / woodworking books. Look at the used books, and you can buy used for way less than new. I buy a lot of used books, and I cannot say I ever got stung on the quality based on the amount paid. They tell you the condition of the book, if it has margin notes in it, etc.
Bill Hylton's Power-Tool Joinery (Popular Woodworking) by Bill Hylton (Jul 1, 2005) is used - $1.44 + 3.99 shipping.
Country Pine: Furniture You Can Make With the Table Saw and Router (Hardcover) $1.78 + 3.99 shipping.
Country Pine Furniture Projects: 32 Classic Pieces to Build for Your Home (American Woodworker) by Bill Hylton, Sally Onopa and Mitch Mandel (May 1, 2008) $0.25 + 3.99 shipping in "used acceptable condition" or $7.89 + free amazon shipping in "used-good" condition.

Success with Routers: Techniques & Tips by Fred Matlack Bill Hylton (2000) used - $4.00 Amazon prime.

There are lots of good inexpensive books out there. just keep looking on the internet.

Firstly, thank you for pointing out the sticky. I never would have noticed it. I'll sift through it whenever I can.

Secondly, you confirmed my original research that Bill Hylton books are a good buy. I've bought plenty of used books through Thiftbooks before so I'm familiar and comfortable with purchasing used. I'll check Amazon out right now. Thank You.

Thanks again for the info. Bought him a copy of Bill Hyltons: Woodworking With The Router, 1996 Soft Cover Edition, for $4. Good Condition and is actually in great condition. I haven't gone through the sticky yet, but hopefully this'll be enough to get him started.
