Black Walnut Table Finishing

I am building a black walnut dining table and am bouncing around as to the best way to finish it. I want the dark color to not fade or yellow over time, and I want the top to be durable and able to withstand every day use in a family environment. My current thought is to use Behlen Solar-Lux stain to set the color, then a sanding sealer (Zinsser seal coat), and apply Old Masters gel stain, and finally finish with a brush on polyurethane. I just wanted to throw this out there to the world and get some thoughts or ideas from others that may have more experience. Thanks in advance.

I don't think you would be happy with the appearance of gel stain on walnut. A gel stain is more like thinned down paint. The walnut wood has a texture to it. Do you wish to do a glass like finish like is commonly done on walnut and mahogany? If so you need to fill the grain with a pastewood grain filler. This levels the surface so you can put a smoother finish on. The grain filler can be tinted dark so you could fill the grain and stain it dark in one step. If you are wanting a finish that doesn't yellow over time then it would be better to use a water based polyurethane. Any oil based finish will yellow over time. The water based poly is an acrylic finish which wouldn't yellow. You would just have to wait a week after using a grain filler or stain which contained linseed oil to use a waterborne finish.

I use Waterlox on all table tops and they never turn yellow.
