Bathroom Vanity

I have a small question as a newb. I'm attempting to make a bathroom vanity cabinet for my mom, that will end up being painted per her request. My question is- since it will be painted, what type of wood would be cheaper, hold the paint well-overall be the best option.
Thanks in advance,
Jared

I'd go for 3/4 Birch ply for the box and poplar for the faceframes, rails and stiles. I've used the "sande-ply" option as well for closet built-ins when budget is tight, and it paints up reasonably well, but it's a fall-back.

Anything softer than poplar will get dented up on the front. I watch for good deals on 1x8s and 1x10s and re-saw everything in the shop.

Do you have a design yet? Will it be open or are you making doors and drawers?

What about MDF for the cabinet itself? Would be cheaper than Birch ply. Around here Birch ply is $45 a sheet, and MDF is about $25-30 a sheet. Then use the Poplar for the face frame and doors. I know MDF paints very well. Depending on how big the vanity is going to be, there may not be much of a price difference between the Birch and MDF depending on your needs. I use Birch ply and Poplar ALOT! I love working with them both, especially the Poplar.

Yeah, poplar is the BEES KNEES!

MDF is a little scary if this is a bath though, right?

Thanks for the ideas. I think I'll go with the Poplar and Birch plywood. I'd be too worried with the MDF.

You could go with Maple plywood instead of Birch.

I use the birch ply for most of my paint grade stuff. One cool thing I like too, is to have the inside be melamine. I can usually find 3/4" sheets with a wood veneer on one side and melamine on the other. It's a nice strong surface that wouldn't need to be painted.
