This discussion shouldn't be about hand tools versus power tools,it is more of a philosophical thing.Shouldn't you endeavour to be as good as you can possibly be in all aspects of your chosen activity? You wouldn't catch a golfer who was a brilliant putter neglecting his driving or any other aspect of his game. While woodworking isn't a competitive activity, the essence of it is to accurately and efficiently turn a piece of wood into the object you would like.Learning more about the material and having the ability to use a range of tools, according to the situation, will make you a better woodworker.

To give an example;a fellow I know was held up on a project because he didn't have a large enough piece of wood to machine to size.He had a piece that was sufficiently large to do the job and it simply didn't occur to him that because it was fairly small it wouldn't be a big job to saw and plane by hand.
