advice for a beginner

I posted this under the welcome threads but thinks it goes better here.

I am new & want to get into carving & am curious what type of basic tools I'd need, that aren't too much, that would be good for making small sculptures about a foot tall.

What is recommended?
Are palm tools good for small sculptures?
Can a mallet be used with small beginner's tools?

Thanks in advance.

Palm tools are basically short and allow good hand control. You might try an inexpensive set to get started. Sharp tools can be used to pare. You can use a mallet (wood). You'll get used to how hard to strike the tool.

If you find you are into carving, maybe then go for a better set. Or, buy the individual tools if you can narrow down the variety. Many of the profiles are available in different sizes.

You might find this site helpful:

I ordered some carving blocks and other supplies from him and he sent me some extra at no charge. He also seems very willing to help out new people. This is also the site with the best prices that I found as I was shopping around.
