I'm very tempted to try to tackle the project ourselves, but I'm not sure how much of an investment we'd have to make in some tools. We have a miter saw and a circular saw, and some clamps and whatnot, but no table saw or router. I was thinking I could maybe just have the bigger cuts done at Home Depot or a lumber yard, and use the circular saw for the smaller cuts.
a table saw, sanders, router, workbench area, and bunch o clamps are needed for that project. and knowledge how to use them.

can you build it - likely yes.
for the same amount of money - yes incl buying the tools
in the same amount of time - likely no. learning curve, but you will have all of the tools at the end.

For furniture-grade, $10K would be a reasonable Bay Area price.

Thanks, yeah, this is more on topic for some of my projects, and interests, too.
