I made my kitchen countertops out of some leftover jatoba flooring. I planed it then nailed it to 3/4" ply substrate and ran an 1 1/2" strip across the front. it looks great even a year later. I can understand wanting solid slabs but my countertops cost me less than $100 and look better than multi-thousand-dollar custom granite jobs.
