It's a lot easier to make a separate base cap out of Poplar. Last time I looked, base cap alone was about 90 cents a foot. Make the base as tall as you like, and all sorts of possibilities for a separate cap. You can even pop the base in place with PowerGrab, and as few nails as possible to have a crater to deal with. For a finish nail crater in MDF, saturate the crater with white or yellow glue. It will sand down just fine after it's dry.
