lawn mower

yea in Florida it's time for one last mow down

however, my lawn mower has decided to call it a season


It's starts super fine but then starts to fail fast

I'm thinking it's the spark plug that is dead



whatcha think guys is wrong here???

Stuart I would clean the air filter, spark plug, and fuel filter and check the oil. Then get back with us.

ok


lets put it this way:


[push gas button 3 times]

pull cord

motor starts and is spinning very well

2-3 secs later it quits

as if the power goes thru and clunks out

motor is Murray 4.0 HP 20 inch made by Briggs and Strannon [just a standard mower]

Try pushing the gas primer after it starts and
just before it dies.

If it picks up, you have a bad diaphragm in the
carb.

They are not hard to change, just take it apart
carefully and take it to a parts place and make
sure you get the same one.

OR: forget all that mechanic stuff, turning wrenches, dropping small parts, tearing gaskets, smelling like gasoline for a week....

...and go down to your local hardware store and buy a can of Seafoam. Pour a generous amount (6-8 tablespoons) in the empty gas tank. Start the mower on this Seafoam, let it run until it runs out. Then put in your regular straight gas and add a cap full of Seafoam to each tank. Your carb system will be cleaned, lubed, sealed, and will last several more years.

I use Seafoam on every engine I have except automobiles---two cycle, four cycle, V-twin motorcycle. Everything that sits for a spell sometimes between running---genny, Victory m/c, blower, trimmer, two mowers, snow thrower and chain saw.

Ok now it sounds like you have fuel line problems. If it has a few years on it check the fuel line between the carb and the tank. It only takes a hair line split in the line for it not to run.

but sound promising of the options here


huuummmm the tank is fully topped.. I will check fuel line first see if there is a leak.

then getting seafoam will be attempted.


looking into the parts might work as well

I will post in update asap

at least the grass has stopped growing till next Spring

I had a similar problem with my riding mower earlier this year, except it ran fine until the engine got hot, would stop, and wouldn't start again until it cooled off. The problem was a bad ignition module (a magnetic device that's mounted adjacent to the spinning magnetic portion of the flywheel). Some older cars had a similar problem when the coil started going bad and would fail when it got hot. Anyway, a little internet research helped me to diagnose the problem and it was an easy fix after purchasing the right part.

As noted above, the problem is somewhere in the fuel system. Could be the diaphragm, a kinked fuel line, a plugged fuel line, etc. Try the simple fixed first.

Hey BHOFM

I tried the gas primer while the motor was just starting and that worked

in fact worked so well no longer need to push gas primer again while blade is spinning

That tells me there is a slight air leak in the diaphragm. Once the engine has enough air
flow it will over come the problem, but look
for it to act up again.

yep you are totally correct

there is a low air pressure going on - I can feel it on my finger
