A drawer at the top would be my choice. Looks good.

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.

Looks great but I would say definitely drawers. The night stands have a habit of gathering all the crap that you don't know what else to do with and at least with a drawer, it would conceal it. Great work.

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

Or you could ....

Enclose the top space with a flip down panel hinged at the bottom.
It becomes a larger surface when necessary AND conceals the contents on the shelf. You can leave the bottom space as is.

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

Personally, I like the openness ... as is. I could visualize a bedside radio etc, easy to access.

Drawers can hide a lot and will look less cluttered.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it over?

You can get, or make, some wicker baskets. fit two of them on a shelf and it helps to keep things organized without actually building in drawers with sliders, etc.

Nice. I second the motion for a drawer at the top. My idea of quick nightstands is two milk crates turned upside down.
