Plier case

My dad used to mark his tools with a slight drag of a welding arc. I used to have several but this is the only one left. i will give it to his only grandson(my nephew) in a case. It will be made of maple and will have pin hinges. I've never had good luck with these but I intend to practice on scrap pieces.

looking good so far !!
if you are not satisfied with the end result when you are
finished - you can always make another case.
excellent project to practice on.
the only thing I would change would be the color of the cloth
(or flock) and the size of the recess. the pliers can "get lost"
in a dark background recessed display case.
also, put a small tack under the nose of the pliers so they
will be more visible.
you can play around with the recessed area with styrofoam
until you get it to where YOU like it - then transfer those
measurements to wood.
again - good job so far.

Pat, had a little free time on my hands while sipping my coffee and this
is how I would imagine your finished project. . . . . make the board
that holds the pliers larger to account for the frame. and you can see
that if you make the recess for the pliers a little larger and not so deep,
it will give a better display. the pliers can be held in place with Earth
Magnets anchored in the wood under the cloth. then a nice brass tag
to provide a little history of the item in the case so everyone else will
know where it came from as well as when.
if the hinges don't turn out like you want, you can build just a box type
of case and have the display board inserted from the back.

I thought about a shadow box type case but I think I'll carry on with the little chest type. As far as the felt, I had red, dark green, that brown and black. So I used the brown.

This apple tree branch will become the base.

Could have swore you said you never had luck with these in your post,...... yep you did say that. If that case is your idea of bad luck Id really like to see something you feel better about. That apple had some gorgeous patterns in it, was all most a shame to hide on the bottom. The maple turned out great and the whole thing looks perfect.

Thank you John. I got them right this time. I think the last time I tried to use them on something too big and I had made my chamfer too small. I apologize for not following your ideas.
