When my oldest daughter left for university I had made her a chest to supplement the skimpy storage of her residence room.I had made it out of BC fir and lined the interior with cedar. Now she asks me to make one for her daughter. I decided to make it out of Oak. I have some nice wide boards but I'll keep them for something else. I will use some of my church pew oak. It will have some significance as it comes from the church where I was married an my wife grew up around. Both daughters were christened there as well.
IMO, their is huge value in making a piece like this for your grand daughter, but even more so because the wood has a story that ties it to you. I love that. I made our bedroom set, and each piece of wood has a story and connects to us or friends. Good for you!
I just came back from my second cataract operation so I won't be making sawdust, lifting or bending over for a while so I am playing with mockups. Glued the appliqués, initials and handle to the box using two sided tape.
Thank you guys. You are right Sam, once she sets it someplace it should stay right there.
