When I bought this house about a dozen years ago they had left an old computer desk in the garage. It was in sad shape having seen water. I fixed it up as best I could and added drawers from a dresser that my daughter had when she was a kid. They were leftover after I turned the dresser into a china cabinet when she went away to college. So that desk/table had been sitting in the little room where I build my models and where I keep the house tools. This winter, we had a aewer backup so it saw water again, except this time it was dirty. So I have to build a new one. Here is the old one.
I really liked that line at the beginning of American Restoration.
"Look at a mans workbench. You see his passions. His works in progress. The things that drive him crazy. Projects that...you get the point. Anyway, every workbench tells a story. And this is ours."
It'll be built in 3 chunks, first the drawer box, then the table end, and finally the top.The drawer box carcase will be made out of oak plywood which used to be in a church pew. The side panels were stripped on one side only and will be refinbished. the back panel and the "in" side of the side panels will stay as is.
Drawer box is done. Turns out the idiot who built it allowed the 1/2 inch for the drawer slides but only at one end. So I told him it would be likely easier to shorten the drawers.:furious:
The table end is done. I was planning to either round off the corners of the legs or cove them. I remembered once they were glued and screwed in place. Has nothing to do with age.:wink2:
I just realized that the only drawers i have in my shop are in my metal craftsman tool chest and not much other than chisels, wrenches and screwdrivers really fit in it. I keep telling myself to build some drawers, but I never can seem to find the right place to put them. I think I've mentioned ripping out the old 2x4 and plywood bench and replacing it (about 90 times now) and its still there still taking up entirely too much space. Once I figure out what to do with all the crap I have jambed underneath it my next big project will be ripping it out and building a bench with drawers to stow stuff worth actually keeping. First I need to pray to the motivational gods to inspire me..
Nice work there landman..I now have storage drawer envy.
Started gluing up the strips end to end using every available clamp. It was my first time using the finger joint bit since it had rearranged three of my fingertips a few years ago. That fear is still there.
The planer stopped. At first glance the belt appeared to have jumped.
Turns out the pulley had jumped too, beaking away, gouging the cutter head keyway and generally destroying itself. Sears tells me they no longer carry the parts and that they could check with the manufacturer which could take several weeks. It looks very much like a Delta so I'll get the parts myself.
