Great day

Had a great day in the shop today. Lit a fire in the wood stove and with the heat at a (pretty much) steady 21 degrees, I had every intention of working on a scrolling piece that I have to get finished. I don't know what happened, but I never even turned the saw on. Instead, I played on my lathe all afternoon. What a great day.

Started playing around with a piece of scrap and remembered the snowmen that some of you guys turned. I remember how much my wife really liked them, so this is my version that I made for her. She loves it.

I was having such a great time, that I threw another piece on the lathe. The scroll project that I was referring to earlier, has a piece on it that I am not happy with. It is 4 pieces of oak, laminated together, but for some reason, it came out striped. Not the effect that I was hoping for, but it worked out nicely for this salt shaker. She loves both projects and I had a blast.

There is a very fine line between a "hobby" and a "mental illness"

I had this happen to me on some oak legs I was making for a coffee table. It looked ok - uniform until I stained it. Then, wow a dark stripe in the middle. The good part, all the legs had the stripe in the middle (laminated 3 pcs of oak), the bad news was that I did not know this would happen so when I shaped and mounted the legs the stripe was at random orientations -DOH!

Well that piece sits in my living room today as a testament to my imperfection!
