Here's a curly maple entertainment center I designed and built a few months ago. The left unit has glass doors, cd and cassette drawers, and adjustable shelving. The right unit houses the video screen on a wall-mounted extension arm, which enables the screen to be pulled forward out of the cabinet and swiveled. Pocket doors enclose it when not in use. The pulls were routed in using a homemade template, then carved out with small gouges to give more purchase for the finger to grab. The mantle shelf is a hollow box mounted onto a 2" x 6", which I had the framers mount before the drywall went up.
